THE ARTICLE

A good package protects the product and communicates clearly. Attractive artwork alone is not enough.

Why this matters

Weight, moisture, light, abrasion and warehousing conditions drive material selection.

Practical checklist

  • Define shipping risks
  • Prototype at final dimensions
  • Validate finishes and print methods
  • Check mandatory product labeling
  • Test stacking and secondary packaging

Execution and acceptance

Compare total unit costs including tooling, waste, finishing and shipping, not only the unit print quote.

Risks and limitations

Environmental claims require substantiation against actual materials and local recycling systems.

Next steps

Provide product samples and distribution requirements before requesting a packaging concept.

Evaluate packaging in use

Assess transport conditions, storage, moisture protection, printing performance and unboxing. Test a physical prototype under realistic handling rather than choosing solely by graphics.

Materials must survive use

Choose board, paper or flexible film by the product’s weight, moisture exposure, storage, transport, printing and end-of-life route. A visually attractive substrate may fail at the folds, seals or adhesive lines.

Run a production-representative sample and check handling durability, barcode legibility, ink adhesion and closure quality. Food-contact suitability is jurisdiction-specific and must not be assumed from appearance.
